FAQS

What Is The History Of JESS?

The Joint European Summer School (JESS) is an annual event that has been running since 2004. Initially focused on solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology within the EU-project Real-SOFC, the summer school expanded its scope in 2010 to include low temperature fuel cells, batteries and electrolysers. Since 2010, the summer school has been organised in its current format as the 'Joint European Summer School'. JESS is jointly organised by the University of Birmingham, Research Centre Jülich, the University of Aachen, and the Technical University of Denmark. It primarily targets university students, post-doctoral researchers, and professionals looking to enhance their knowledge and skills in the field of fuel cell, electrolyser, and battery applications.

Is This Programme Right For Me?

JESS primarily targets an audience of PhD students and post-doctoral researchers. The topical content of JESS is tailored to the needs of a diverse audience: newcomers to the field, experienced students, and young professionals working at the forefront of fuel cell, electrolyzer, and battery applications. All teachers are active researchers at the forefront of the topics they teach, and the format with a limited group of people all staying at the same hotel at which the courses are held, makes for networking and good discussions during the stay. The school is divided into introductory and advanced classes. The introductory classesare meant to prime the PhD students early in or prior to their studies in the basics of electrochemical cells for conversion and storage of energy, i.e., fuel cells, electrolyzers and batteries. People from industry and authorities with a technical background who are entering the field are very welcome too and typically among the audience. Teaching is arranged in three parallel tracks: High-temperature fuel cells and electrolyzers with a focus on solid oxide cellsLow-temperature fuel cells and electrolyzers with a focus on PEM cells and alkaline cellsBatteriesA number of overarching lectures are given jointly to all three tracks, but most of the time, lecturing is within the specific track chosen by the participant. The advanced coursesare meant for students with the basic knowledge in place who like to go deeper into selected specialized topics, which may change from year to year. See the tab on advanced courses. More experienced researchers and engineers are just as welcome and have over the years taken advantage of the JESS offerings. Many professionals wish to review these technologies and learn about them, for instance, to boost their knowledge for a newly acquired position or collect credits for a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) scheme. The Business Development Course is ideal for individuals (Students, PHDs, Professionals) who are interested in pursuing a career in business development or entrepreneurship or supporting coroporates in the field of innovation. It is suitable for professionals from various industries, business owners, aspiring entrepreneurs, and anyone looking to enhance their business acumen and strategic thinking skills.

How Much Does The Live-streamed Online Programme Cost?
